My only concern with this would be security, but if you don&#8217;t care about that, then this is for you:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>So we heard about<span style=\"font-weight: bold;\"> one way to get a slow computer up and running <\/span>but it involved making the jump to Linux.<span style=\"font-weight: bold;\"> <\/span>Now lets say for arguments sake <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">you can&#8217;t go the way of el di pablo and <\/span><a style=\"font-weight: bold;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bauer-power.net\/2007\/10\/moving-wifey-to-linux.html\">Push Ubuntu on your Woman?<\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bauer-power.net\/2007\/10\/moving-wifey-to-linux.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\"> <\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">We couldn&#8217;t get her to use that Pentium 3 with XP because it runs like a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: normal; font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"font-size: 100%;\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">snail. And of course she wont run 2000 because &#8220;that&#8217;s an outdated operating system&#8221; <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">(this she knows! lol)!<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>It turns out  <span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">we can stop a bunch of services and make some mods to get down to running a minimalistic version of Windows XP<\/span> (pro or home). <span style=\"font-style: italic; font-weight: bold;\">These instructions are for a machine that will not be on a domain! Will not use internet connection sharing, Will not use the windows firewall.Windows update will not work until you turn back on two services. Instructions below.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/bp1.blogger.com\/_NVxlqh8F-Yo\/Rw5AXZAILkI\/AAAAAAAABSA\/dfpMzkRndnY\/s1600-h\/services.gif\" onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\"><img decoding=\"async\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5120100596959424066\" style=\"margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer;\" src=\"http:\/\/bp1.blogger.com\/_NVxlqh8F-Yo\/Rw5AXZAILkI\/AAAAAAAABSA\/dfpMzkRndnY\/s400\/services.gif\" border=\"0\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-style: italic; color: #ff0000;\">This will create a decent machine for you or your significant other to browse the web and work on office documents. Who would have thought Windows XP was so bloated!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: normal; font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"font-size: 100%;\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\"><!--more-->Step One<\/span> Install Windows Xp on your machine as a CLEAN install. Don&#8217;t install OFFICE!<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: normal; font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"font-size: 100%;\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Step two <\/span>Goto my computer properties, Advanced &gt;&gt;&gt; Performance &gt;&gt;&gt; Visual effects and turn off effects<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Step Three <\/span>Open up services and run through them disabling the ones on the  following list<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Alerter<\/li>\n<li>Application Layer Gateway Service<br \/>\n(<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Internet Connection Sharing and the Internet Connection Firewall<\/span>)<\/li>\n<li>Automatic Updates<\/li>\n<li>Background Intelligent Transfer Service<br \/>\nUses idle network bandwidth to transfer data. (<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">For windows updates<\/span>)<\/li>\n<li>ClipBook<\/li>\n<li>Computer Browser  <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">If you are on a network with other computers, and need to see them, this may be a useful tool.  Otherwise, disable it.<\/span><\/li>\n<li>Cryptographic Services<\/li>\n<li>Distributed Transaction Coordinator<\/li>\n<li>Error Reporting Service<\/li>\n<li>Help and Support<\/li>\n<li>Human Interface Device Access<\/li>\n<li>Indexing Service<\/li>\n<li>Internet Connection Firewall (ICF) \/ Internet Connection Sharing (ICS)<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"> Provides network address translation, addressing, name resolution and\/or intrusion prevention services for a home or small office network. We do all of this via our router.<\/span><\/li>\n<li>Messenger<\/li>\n<li>Net Logon (only used in a domain)<\/li>\n<li>NetMeeting Remote Desktop Sharing<\/li>\n<li>Remote Desktop Help Session Manager<\/li>\n<li>Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Locator<\/li>\n<li>Remote Registry<\/li>\n<li>System Restore Service <span style=\"font-weight: bold; color: #ff0000;\">(This one i will leave up to you)<\/span><\/li>\n<li>TCP\/IP NetBIOS Helper<\/li>\n<li>Telephony (<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">If you use a modem to connect to the internet, leave it enabled<\/span>.)<\/li>\n<li>Telnet<\/li>\n<li>Terminal Services (<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">unless you will need to remotely connect to this machine &#8211; doubtful<\/span>)<\/li>\n<li>Themes<\/li>\n<li>Uninterruptible Power Supply<\/li>\n<li>Upload Manager<\/li>\n<li>Windows Time<\/li>\n<li>Workstation<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Download open office or any other variation just because MS Office is a memory hog! Use FoxIt instead of Adobe PDF reader&#8230; Thats it you should have a tight little system now. If you can bump the memory up &#8211; Do it!
