สารเคมีที่ใช้ในการเกษตรมีการผลิตขึ้นมาหลายรูปเพื่อความสะดวกในการใช้ตามจุดประสงค์ต่างๆ กัน สารเหล่านี้ไม่ใช่สารบริสุทธิ์ แต่จะมีองค์ประกอบหลัก 2-3 อย่างที่สำคัญคือ

1. สารออกฤทธิ์ (active ingredient หรือ a.i.) หมายถึงเนื้อสารจริงๆ ที่จะแสดงผลต่อพืช ได้ตามคุณสมบัติที่สารนั้นมีอยู่ มักจะบอกเป็นเปอร์เซ็นต์ของสารออกฤทธิ์ในสารผสมทั้งหมด หรือแสดงหน่วยนํ้าหนักต่อปริมาตร (เช่นกรัมต่อลิตร) เช่น Planofix® ระบุว่ามี NAA 4.5% เป็นสารออกฤทธิ์ หมายความว่าสาร Planofix® 1 ขวด ปริมาตร 100 มล. มีเนื้อสาร NAA ผสมอยู่ 4.5 กรัม อย่างไรก็ตามมี PGRC หลายชนิดที่จำหน่ายในประเทศไทยขณะนี้โดยได้ระบุชนิดและปริมาณของสารออกฤทธิ์ที่ผสมอยู่

2. สารทำให้เจือจาง (diluent) หมายถึงสารอื่นๆ ไม่ว่าจะเป็นของแข็ง ของเหลว หรือก๊าซ ที่ใช้ผสมกับสารออกฤทธิ์ เพื่อให้ความเข้มข้นของสารออกฤทธิ์ลดลงมาอยู่ในระดับเหมาะสม เพื่อสะดวกในการใช้ สารทำให้เจือจางที่ผสมอยู่ในส่วนผสมจะต้องไม่ทำปฏิกริยาเคมีกับสารออกฤทธิ์และต้องไม่เกิดผลเสียต่อพืช สารทำให้เจือจางอาจเป็นอะไรก็ได้ เช่น นํ้า แอลกอฮอล์ ดิน แป้ง หรืออากาศ ยกตัวอย่างสาร Planofix® 1 ขวด ปริมาณ 100 มล ซึ่งมีเนื้อสาร NAA ผสมอยู่ 4.5 กรัม แสดงว่าส่วนที่เหลือเกือบทั้งหมด (ประมาณ 95%) เป็นสารทำให้เจือจาง
